What Is SAP BRIM? The Future of Billing and Revenue Management

Subscription-based business models, usage-based pricing and multi-channel sales have become fundamental dynamics of today's business world. Managing these complex structures with traditional SAP SD or FI modules creates significant challenges — both technically and operationally. This is exactly where SAP BRIM (Billing and Revenue Innovation Management) comes in.

SAP BRIM Components

SAP BRIM consists of four tightly integrated core components:

1. Subscription Order Management (SOM)

Manages the lifecycle of subscription orders. When a customer starts, modifies or cancels a subscription, the entire process is tracked through SOM. Product catalogs, pricing rules and contract management live in this layer.

2. Convergent Charging (CC)

Collects usage data and rates it according to pricing rules. Supports complex scenarios such as fixed fees, usage-based tariffs, tiered pricing and promotional discounts. Provides both real-time and batch charging capabilities.

3. Convergent Invoicing (CI)

Consolidates billable items from different sources into a single invoice. Combines SD invoices, CC charges and manual items into one consolidated invoice for the customer. Invoice templates, tax calculations and invoicing cycle management are among CI's core capabilities.

4. FI-CA (Contract Accounting)

The financial backbone of BRIM. Contract-based accounting, receivables management, payment collection and reconciliation flow through FI-CA. Unlike traditional FI-AR, it can handle high-volume transactions (millions of customers and invoices) with strong performance.

Which Industries Use BRIM?

SAP BRIM is preferred especially in industries with high-volume and complex billing needs:

  • Telecommunications: Usage-based tariffs, package management, roaming charges
  • Energy and Utilities: Consumption-based billing, tariff management
  • Media and Publishing: Digital subscriptions, content-based pricing
  • Insurance: Policy-based premium calculation and collection
  • SaaS and Technology: License- and usage-based billing

What to Watch For in BRIM Projects

Proper planning is critical for a successful BRIM implementation. A detailed analysis of existing billing processes, a data migration strategy and the integration architecture form the cornerstones of the project. Getting CI and FI-CA configurations right upfront, in particular, prevents financial inconsistencies that may surface after go-live.

At VEX-I, we provide end-to-end consulting on SAP BRIM projects. With our deep experience in Convergent Invoicing and FI-CA, we modernize your billing processes.
